Letter to Parents

Parent or Guardian:

This school year your child is scheduled to receive sex education as part of Bulloch County School’s overall health education curriculum.  We are committed to an abstinence-based curriculum which means that while the focus is on abstinence throughout the unit, grades eight and nine will receive information regarding pregnancy prevention while also being provided knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases and protection against them. In addition, students will begin to develop knowledge and skills which are intended to help reduce the prevalence and tolerance of sexual violence in our community. Classes will be single-gender (boys with a male instructor and girls with a female instructor). Depending on your child’s grade level, middle grades curriculum may include the following:

• Female and Male Reproductive System

• Puberty

• Staying Safe Online

• Reproduction and Teen Pregnancy

• HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections

• Contraception and Pregnancy Prevention - Eighth-grade only

• Abstinence

• Healthy Relationships

• Decision Making

• Youth Violence Prevention lessons - Healthy versus Unhealthy Relationships; Respecting Boundaries; Effective Communication

You are welcome to contact your child’s Health/Physical Education teacher at the school or Debbie Sarratt at the school district's central office to make an appointment to preview the lessons of the unit.  Bulloch County Schools acknowledges that parents/guardians are the primary sexuality educators for their child/children, and we are committed to partnering with you to provide supplementary resources to support you in this role.  Access to these resources includes the link provided below and a Parent Toolkit packet that can be picked up at your child’s school upon request.

Parents/guardians have the option of excluding their child/children from the 10-day sexuality education curriculum if it is in conflict with your personal conscience, morality, or religious beliefs.  If this is the case with your child, please fill out the Opt-out Form and send it to your child’s health education teacher.  Students who are opted-out will receive an independent study folder with related assignments from the health book and will be sent to an alternate supervised location during the class period throughout the 10-day unit.
