Reading Nooks

The Bulloch County Literacy Council's annual Reading Nook Contest encourages comfortable places that are set aside where children can enjoy reading. They can be as simple as a corner of a room or a special chair with a basket of books. Reading nooks encourage reading and reading aloud to children, especially those ages birth to five-years-old.

Learn more about the 2022 contest going on February 14 through March 2, 2022.

Participants (parents, family members, teachers or caregivers) upload a digital photo of themselves reading with a child, ages infant to five-years-old, in their favorite reading nook, to the online contest area of the Statesboro Herald's website during the contest period.

The community can vote online at the same website, and winning entries are featured inside the Statesboro Herald at the end of Read Across America week.

The contest has been sponsored for the past two years by Kids World Learning Center, a strong supporter of the Bulloch County Literacy Council and its Bulloch READ initiatives.

Reading Nooks at your business

The Bulloch County Literacy Council encourages reading nooks in businesses to boost access to books for children and help improve preschool and early-elementary literacy in Bulloch County.

Bulloch Solutions and Franklin Chevrolet-Buick-GMC, two of the Literacy Council's Bulloch READ program sponsors, are the first business to establish reading nooks for children in their locations.

Reading nooks are a great way to give children easier access to books, encourage reading, and create a literacy-rich environment for children in our community. The cozy corners offer a place for kids to look at or read books, and families may take a book home from local business' reading nooks to help build their own home libraries and nooks.

The Literacy Council is available to guide businesses in how to establish a reading nook. Contact Crystal Simpkins, director of early learning and literacy at Bulloch County Schools, at  912.212.8892 or by email.
