Psychological Services

School psychologists have a variety of roles. They work and consult with various faculty teams within our schools. This includes areas such as school safety, response to intervention, school discipline, school improvement and special education. They constantly work behind the scenes with individuals, faculty and parents. Virtually all of the individual cases school psychologists handle involve confidential information which is why some parents are surprised to learn that the school district has these contributing professionals. 

Psychologists Support Students & Faculty

Bulloch County has six school psychologists who support our children, families, and faculty with these services:

  • Work with all special education students and complete comprehensive student evaluations for special education placement and services.
  • Provide their professional expertise in assessments and special education eligibility criteria.
  • Work with our general education students and the multiple-tiered system of supports the school district provides for students who may have acute learning, behavioral or emotional difficulties. 
  • Consult with a variety of stakeholders including teachers, counselors, administrators and parents of general education students who may have a variety support needs. 
  • Provide direct services when needed to work with students who have behavioral needs and provide behavior plan development and implementation.
  • Work with students, typically on a case-by-case basis, to provide input for student program planning and program implementation and also contribute to ongoing analysis/ research for program effectiveness. We are constantly working behind the scenes with individuals, faculty and parents. Virtually all of the individual cases school psychologists handle involve confidential information which is why some parents are surprised to learn that the school system has these contributing professionals. 

Psychologists' Role in School Safety & School Climate

Our school psychologists also provide knowledge to our ongoing school improvement and professional development efforts. They are crucial members of our internal teams:

  • Crisis intervention Team - provide psychological support and grief counseling to faculty and students during times of crisis, such as the untimely death of a student or teacher. 
  • Mental health service consultations - serve as liaisons and support for students and faculty.
  • District-level and school-level consultations and various teacher and parent training
  • Assist with functional behavioral assessments and behavior intervention program planning. 
  • Assist with 504 assessment and 504 plan development. 
  • School data and program analysis and decision making.
  • Facilitate manifestation determination meetings for special education students.

School Psychologist Qualifications

School psychologists are the highest trained entry-level position serving students within the school systems in Georgia. Practicing school psychologists must have a minimum of an Educational Specialist (EdS) degree which is one degree above a master's level but just below a doctorate. 

All practicing school psychologists are certified by the state of Georgia’s Professional Standards Commission. There are several school psychologists in Bulloch County who also hold a National School Psychologist certification.
