Contractors in the Classrooms

Bulloch County students learn skills from local builders

High school students in Bulloch County are not just learning skills from their teachers, but from a crew of local contractors who are eager to help educate the next generation of skilled workers.

These local experts frequently share their time, tools, and talents with students in Bulloch County Schools' Architecture & Construction career pathway. Housed at Statesboro High School, the pathway is also open to students from Portal and Southeast Bulloch high schools. The partnership between schools and contractors gives students more real-world construction skills and better prepares them for jobs in high-demand skilled trades right here in Bulloch County and the immediate area.

“We are so very thankful for our construction partners. They are dedicated to giving our students practical experiences and supporting our competitions.” Josh Hall, Statesboro High School Construction Teacher

Recent Collaboration: Students master roofing skills with Chandler Roofing

Most recently, representatives from Chandler Roofing came to Statesboro High. The visit was designed to give students high-value, practical training for jobs in the construction industry.

Students learned essential roofing skills from the professionals. They were taught the right way to put down underlayment, drip edges, and shingles. Students got to practice these skills themselves and received helpful feedback right away. This lesson also helped students get ready for an upcoming roofing competition and gave them a glimpse of a local career path option after graduation.

To support this important lesson, Chandler Roofing generously gave all the necessary roofing materials to the Statesboro High School construction program for free.

In 2024, Statesboro High School’s Architecture & Construction program received its national industry certification from both the Georgia Department of Education and Construction Ready, a not-for-profit organization which seeks to educate young people about the construction industry. The certification designates the Statesboro High Construction program’s excellence, and the school received a grant from the Georgia Legislature to purchase additional tools and equipment. The program will undergo a renewal process every five years.

Industry-Certified Program & Teacher Receive Honors

Hall's program has achieved National Construction Ready Industry Certification which verifies to local contractors that it meets industry-recognized standards for safety, skills, and professionalism, and that students are learning foundational skills to enter the workforce immediately after graduation. The strength of Statesboro's partnerships with construction industry leaders to support instruction was a key factor in achieving the certification.

Hall was recently named the Statesboro-Bulloch Chamber of Commerce's Career Technical Teacher of the Year, and he received the Georgia Association for Career & Technical Education's Carl Perkins Community Service Award. These awards are a testament to his commitment to build partnerships between the school and community.

Bulloch County Schools' Architecture & Construction pathway is one of 35 career pathways available to high school students. It is a three-course program which teaches safety and tool skills.
Students also have the opportunity to earn special industry-recognized certifications that are valued by employers. These certifications help students qualify for jobs in fields like carpentry, electrical work, engineering, plumbing, and general construction.
