More Than Miles: A Legacy of Citizens Stepping Up to Drive School Buses

Local citizens driving school buses as either a primary or bi-vocational job is not a new concept. School bus drivers in the 19th and early 20th Centuries were local farmers, business owners, parents and grandparents, who gave of their time to help ensure children could get to school. In fact the Blue Bird Body Company, a major manufacturer of school buses, got its start in Fort Valley, Georgia in 1927, when Albert L. Luce Sr., who owned the Ford dealership, built a bus body on the truck chassis of a customer’s vehicle who was working as a drive students to school.

That spirit of helping the community’s children get to school still exists in Bulloch County today. Many of Bulloch County Schools’ drivers are farmers, small business and home-based business owners, retirees, parents and grandparents. For instance, there are even parents who have become bus drivers to drive for athletic trips. It's a great opportunity for parents and grandparents of student athletes since bus drivers get into away sports events for free.
