Frequently Asked Questions

These are frequently asked questions about School Choice Privilege. If you have additional questions, contact us by email or call the key contact resources listed.

Q:  I see that no schools have space and are not accepting school choice requests for 2024-2025.  May I make a request for my child to attend a closed school?
A:  No.  The only exception is if you are a full-time employee of Bulloch County Schools. If you are a full-time employee of the school district, you may submit an application for your child to attend a closed school. All efforts will be made to approve the employee's child if one of the following conditions is met.

  • The school requested is one which is within the attendance zone of the employee's primary work location; or
  • The school requested allows the student to stay in the same school feeder pattern, even if the employee’s work location has changed since initial acceptance under School Choice Privilege.
  • The employee may also submit an application for any open school, but there are no special considerations given to employment status when neither of the above conditions is met.

Q:  If my child will attend school next year in the zone in which they live, will I need to submit an application?
A:  No, School Choice Privilege only applies to parents who request for their child to be allowed to attend a school outside of the attendance zone of the child's primary residence.

Q: I submitted a request. When will I be notified if my choice request was approved?

A: For those who submit a request for 2024-2025, by the deadline of May 17, 2024, please contact Bulloch County Schools if you do not receive your decision letter by Friday, June 14, 2024.

Q:  If my child was previously approved for a school choice privilege request to attend a school outside of our attendance zone as a student in the following grades, and my child will continue on in that same school next year, do I need to re-apply: (1)Kindergarten through fourth grade; (2) sixth through seventh; (3) or ninth through eleventh?
A:  No, once approved your child may remain at that school as long as your child meets the school district's daily attendance requirements.

Q:  If my child will advance from Pre-Kindergarten to Kindergarten, do I need to apply?
A: If your child attended Pre-Kindergarten at a school that was not your attendance zoned school, then, yes.  School choice privilege does not apply to Pre-Kindergarten, so all Kindergarten out-of-zone requests require an application.

Q:  If I will have a Kindergarten student enrolling next year, do I need to wait until 10 days into the school year to apply for school choice?
A:
No, requests for Kindergarten students should be submitted during the same window as all other requests.

Q:  If my child will advance to sixth grade from our current out-of-zone elementary school for which we received a school choice privilege approval or ninth grade from a middle school, do I need to re-apply?
A:
Yes, all students who will advance from their previously out-of-zone school choice approved elementary or middle school to those schools' feeder pattern middle or high schools must re-apply for school choice privilege. This includes Portal Middle High School.

Q: Are high schools still considered open-zone campuses?
A:  No, due to ongoing issues with capacity and increasing enrollment, both Statesboro High School and Southeast Bulloch High School are closed schools, unless you are an employee working within that feeder pattern.

Q: When will I submit my request?
A: The School Choice Privilege application for the 2024-2025 school year will be available online beginning at 7:30 a.m., on Monday, April 29, 2024, and must be submitted by 4:30 p.m., on Friday, May 17, 2024.
