BOE hosts annual listening & learning forum for Community

 

The Bulloch County Board of Education will host its annual listening and learning forum, Speak Up for Education on Thursday, March 29, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. at Statesboro High School. The event is for school councils, parents and anyone in the community interested in K-12 public education.

 

Doors Open

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Please enter the main entrances on Lester Road through either the main lobby entrance or the auditorium entrance that faces the student parking lot.

 

New Format

This year Speak Up for Education has a new format. In addition to Superintendent Charles Wilson hosting listening sessions to hear parent’s questions and concerns, the event will focus on equipping and encouraging parents and the community to volunteer in local schools and tips to help children be more successful in school. There will also be a family resource area featuring information from key education support organizations.  

 

Registration (Begins at 5:30)

There will be computers in the main lobby to register your attendance.  Volunteers will be on hand to assist you. A separate area is available to register your children for free childcare (ages birth to 12) services during the event. Event sessions begin at 6:20 p.m. Guests will choose up to three sessions to attend.  A list of available sessions is listed below. Please feel free to arrive and attend sessions as your schedule allows.

 

Free Pizza Supper (5:30 - 6:00)

A free pizza supper is available for all guests and children. It will be served from the SHS Gymnasium Concession Stand in the main hallway, and the cafeteria is open for seating. If you have a child whom you are placing in the event's free childcare area, children will be served their pizza in the childcare area.  

 

Childcare Services

Parents and community members, who attend Speak Up for Education can request free, on-site childcare during the event. The school system’s family liaisons coordinate this service for children ages birth to 12 years old. Please contact Amanda McQuaig at 912-212-8513 or email amcquaig@bullochschools.org to pre-register your children or register them onsite when you arrive.

 

The school system’s family liaisons will provide safe supervision, homework assistance, activities, games a pizza supper, and snacks for children.  For infants please provide all supplies they may need (i.e. bottles, diapers). At the event, an area is provided to securely sign children in and out. 

 

Translation Services & Special Accommodations Available 

Language translation services and American with Disabilities Act accommodations are available by request to best facilitate participation. Please contact Amanda McQuaig at 912.212.8513 or amcquaig@bullochschools.org to request assistance. Spanish translation services will be available for each session topic. Note below the time a translator is available in a session.

• 6:00—6:10       Welcome & Announcements (SHS Cafeteria)

• 6:20—6:50       Session 1 - Choose a session from the list below.

• 6:55—7:25       Session 2   Choose a session from the list below.   

• 7:30—8:00       Session 3   Choose a session from the list below.

Available Sessions

Volunteer: How to become a school volunteer or student mentor

   Location: C- Hall; Room #110 (Translator: 7:30 session)

This is an opportunity for parents, stakeholders, and students to discover how they can become an integral part of our mission, to engage the community while having fun by giving back. We will review the school system’s Volunteer Protocol Guidelines as well as how to get started.  There will be something for everyone to take away and take hold of the notion that they, too, can get on board and support an atmosphere of enthusiasm for learning and sharing. 

 

• Literacy: How to ensure your child reads on grade level to learn

  Location: C- Hall; Room # 107 (Translator: 6:55 session)

Learn about our approach to balanced literacy and your child’s experience within each component at school. Also learn tips and activities you can do at home to support your child’s literacy.

 

• Kindergarten: Skills your child needs to know before day one

   Location: C-Hall; Room #114 (Translator: 6:20 session)

Led by Kindergarten teachers, this session will share useful skills with parents to help their child be ready for Kindergarten as well as fun ways to practice learning these skills at home.

 

• Middle School: Making the middle school years successful

  Location:  C-Hall; Room #224 (Translator: 6:20 session)

Share your experiences as a parent so we can gain feedback to enhance stakeholder and community support. Receive a GMAS flyer with upcoming test dates and tips for middle school students.

 

• High School: College & career ready - A High School Road Map

   Location: C-Hall; Room #131 (Translator: 6:55 session)

This session is for parents of students in 8th- 12th grade. High school counselors will discuss how to best prepare your student to be college and career ready when they graduate from high school. We will explore dual enrollment, standardized testing, apprenticeships, and other important milestones/events in your child's high school career.  Parents and students will leave the session with a plan on how to best tackle high school.    

 

• Family Engagement: Connect families & schools for success

  Location: C-Hall; Room #105 (Translator: All sessions)

Your input is needed. Please join us to review and revise the school system’s District Parent & Family Engagement Policy. Learn what this policy is and how it’s created.  How would you like the district to strengthen parent and family engagement? How can we better use Title I funds for parent and family engagement?

   Location: Media Center (Translator: 7:30 session)
