Mole Day began as a way to promote student interest in chemistry. It is typically celebrated October 23, 6:02 a.m. - 6:02 p.m. The date and time are significant, Mole Day being set aside to recognize Avogadro’s Number, 6.02 x 1023, a measuring unit employed in the study of chemistry. Mole Day is celebrated around the world. High schools and colleges engage in various activities related to the mole and its founder, Amadeo Avogadro (1776-1858).
